About AussieFelts

This is the place to learn about the AussieFelts website and the person behind it. You'll learn a little about me, how I started out on my needle felting journey and where I hope it takes me and the AussieFelts website.
I hope you'll enjoy getting to know me a little better.

Who is AussieFelts?

AussieFelts is run by me, an Australian mum by the name of Narelle (aka Rell). I'm in my 30's, married with two wonderful kids. In January of 2008 I was in an Etsy chatroom and I noticed some people were selling needle felted sculptures in their shop. Prior to this i'd never even heard of needle felting. I found a couple of online tutorials that explained the process of sculptural needle felting and my interest in the craft started to grow.

In February 2008 I purchased a needle felting kit that would teach me how to make teddy bears. I never did make those bears. My very first item was a yellow cylindrical shape. It wasn't meant to be anything in particular, I just wanted to see how the needles felted the wool. I then took the rest of the wool from the kit and created a pink cat. Even though I had basic instructions on how to needle felt from the kit, I consider myself to be self taught. I've never taken a class and i've developed my technique through trial and error.

I've always been a crafty/artistic type of person. I can draw. I'm pretty good at coming up with ideas and I really enjoy just creating in general...but I have to say i've finally found the craft i'm passionate about. I only wish I had learnt about it much sooner.

Why the website?

I opened the AussieFelts website for a few reasons. I wanted my own "place" to share my creations and get my name out and about. One day i'd like to be able to sell other needle felting related items other than just the odd sculpture here and there. There is also a massive lack of Australian based websites dedicated purely to needle felting. I hope in some way I can fill the void. Like I said, I opened the website for a few reasons, I have future ideas in mind but for now i'm just happy to share my critters and create my own little space on the internet that might be of interest to others.
